Skylight Installation & Repair
Bring natural light into dark spaces. A properly installed skylight brightens your home while keeping your roof weathertight.
Skylights can dramatically improve your home's comfort, ambiance, and energy efficiency—when they're installed correctly. Improper installation is one of the leading causes of roof leaks, so a skylight has to be integrated into the roof system with proper flashing, insulation, and weatherproofing. Whether you want to add natural light to a dark hallway, brighten a kitchen, or create a focal point in a cathedral ceiling, a well-installed skylight can perform beautifully for decades. Serving Northern Illinois since 1996.

Will a skylight cause my roof to leak?
Not when installed properly. Skylight leaks are almost always the result of improper flashing or poor integration with the roofing system. Manufacturer-approved flashing kits and careful installation are what keep a skylight weathertight.
Are skylights energy efficient?
Modern skylights can be very energy efficient. Quality units feature Low-E coatings, argon gas fills, and insulated frames that meet or exceed ENERGY STAR requirements. In Northern Illinois, south-facing skylights can even provide net heat gain during winter, reducing heating costs while bringing in natural light.
Can an existing skylight be replaced without replacing the whole roof?
Yes, in most cases. The old skylight can be removed and a new one installed in the existing roof opening, with any damaged or deteriorated surrounding roofing and flashing replaced. If your roof is nearing the end of its life, it usually makes sense to replace the skylight at the same time as the roof.
What's the difference between a tubular skylight and a traditional skylight?
Tubular skylights (sun tunnels) use a small roof dome connected to a reflective tube that brings light to areas where a traditional skylight won't fit—like hallways, closets, or first-floor rooms in a two-story home. They're less expensive and easier to install, but they don't provide a view of the sky or ventilation like a traditional skylight.
How do I prevent ice dams around my skylight?
Proper insulation and ventilation are key. Ice & water shield around the entire skylight opening and a well-insulated light shaft help prevent heat loss, and attic ventilation and insulation address the root cause of ice dams. Venting skylights should be closed during winter to prevent heat loss and ice buildup.
